The device commonly used to connect multiple computers within a local area network (LAN) is a switch. A switch enables communication between devices by forwarding data packets to the appropriate recipient based on MAC addresses. Unlike a hub, which broadcasts data to all connected devices, switches intelligently route data, enhancing network efficiency. This capability improves bandwidth utilization and reduces collisions on the network. In addition to switches, routers may also be employed to connect multiple networks, especially when linking a LAN to the internet or other LANs.
