The first commercial smartphone was developed by IBM and released as the Simon Personal Communicator in 1994. It combined a mobile phone with a touchscreen interface, allowing users to make calls, send faxes, and manage contacts and calendars. The Simon laid the groundwork for modern smartphone technology and introduced features we now regard as standard in mobile devices.
