The layer of the Earth largely responsible for its magnetic field is the outer core. This layer is composed of liquid iron and nickel and is located beneath the mantle and above the inner core. The movement of the molten metals in the outer core generates electric currents, which, in turn, produce the Earth's magnetic field through the dynamo effect. This magnetic field plays a vital role in protecting the planet from solar winds and cosmic radiation.
