The layer of skin responsible for producing new cells is the stratum basale, or the basal layer, which is the deepest layer of the epidermis. This area is composed of a single layer of keratinocytes that continually divide and produce new skin cells, which migrate upward to replace dead cells that shed from the skin's surface. The stratum basale also contains melanocytes and other cells critical for skin functions, including pigmentation and protection.
