The main role of the rough endoplasmic reticulum in protein synthesis is to facilitate the translation of ribosomes into proteins. The rough ER is studded with ribosomes, where protein synthesis occurs. Once synthesized, proteins enter the rough ER for folding, modification, and transport to their final destinations, such as the plasma membrane, lysosomes, or secretion outside the cell, thus playing a vital role in cellular function.
