Cellular respiration primarily occurs in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells. This process converts glucose and oxygen into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cell. While some steps of cellular respiration, such as glycolysis, occur in the cytoplasm, the majority of ATP production takes place in the inner mitochondrial membrane during the electron transport chain.
