The capital of Belize, called Belmopan, is located in the central part of the country. Established in 1970 as a result of damage from Hurricane Hattie in Belize City, Belmopan was designed as a political center. It is smaller than Belize City but serves as the administrative heart, with government buildings, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions.
