The most endangered animal species in the world is difficult to pinpoint as various species face extreme threats, but one of the most critically endangered is the Vaquita. This small porpoise, found only in the northern part of the Gulf of California, Mexico, is on the brink of extinction, with fewer than 30 individuals estimated to remain. The primary threat to its survival is bycatch from illegal fishing practices, particularly the use of gillnets targeting another endangered species, the totoaba fish. Conservation efforts are urgent to protect the Vaquita and its habitat from further decline.
