The main food source for a panda is bamboo. Giant pandas have evolved specifically to consume this coarse, fibrous plant, which makes up about 99% of their diet. They primarily feed on various species of bamboo, which provides them with the necessary nutrients, although it is low in protein. Pandas can consume large amounts—often up to 40 pounds a day—due to the low energy content of bamboo. Their strong jaws and specialized teeth are adapted for crushing bamboo stalks and leaves.
