The largest type of shark is the whale shark (Rhincodon typus). Adult whale sharks can grow to lengths of over 40 feet (12 meters) and can weigh as much as 20 tons, making them the largest fish species in the ocean. Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are gentle filter feeders, primarily consuming plankton, small fish, and other tiny marine organisms.
