The largest specific type of fish is the whale shark (Rhincodon typus). These gentle giants can grow up to 60 feet (18 meters) in length and can weigh as much as 15 tons. Whale sharks are filter feeders, primarily consuming plankton, small fish, and other tiny organisms in the water. They are found in warm, tropical oceans and are considered a vulnerable species due to threats such as fishing, habitat loss, and boat strikes. Despite their size, whale sharks are known for their docile nature, often allowing divers to swim alongside them peacefully.
