The total number of papers in the UPSC Mains examination is nine. These include two qualifying papers (one in any Indian language and the other in English) and seven papers that contribute to the final score. The seven graded papers consist of four General Studies papers, one paper on the candidate’s chosen optional subject, and an Essay paper. Candidates must excel across all these papers to secure a competitive position in the selection process for the Civil Services.
