In 2013, the UPSC examination underwent significant changes in its exam pattern. The most notable shift was the introduction of the objective format for the Preliminary examination, which replaced the previous subjective format. Additionally, the number of papers in the Mains examination was reduced, and the General Studies papers were integrated into a more structured format. The Essay paper was also introduced, focusing on candidates’ writing and analytical skills. These changes aimed to streamline the examination process and enhance the relevance of the evaluation of candidates' aptitudes and knowledge.
